SALALAH, FEB 28 -

One person was killed and four seriously injured in a major accident in Salalah on Wednesday.

A collision between two vehicles resulted in a pile-up of five vehicles on Al Robat Street, opposite Salalah Gardens Malls.

The exact cause of the accident is not known. According to eyewitnesses, the driver of a tow vehicle van lost control while trying to save a person who was trying to cross the road, leading to the accident.

One of the cars caught fire after the collision.

“Since the vehicle was speeding, both the tow vehicle and the car collided, resulting in other vehicles colliding with one other,” said the eyewitness.

The Royal Oman Police and Civil Defence personnel rushed to the spot and undertook rescue operations.

All the injured persons have been admitted to the Sultan Qaboos Hospital.

Normal vehicular movement resumed soon after.

The accident spot is prone to accidents because of people trying to cross the road.

Of late, there have been a lot of developments on either side of the road.

Hypermarkets, hotels and branded shops have come up on the road. The Al Wadi area nearby has emerged as an important residential area.

“In the absence of any pedestrian footbridge or pedestrian underpass, some people cross the road,

which is very risky,” said a local resident.
