Sultanate to mark elderly day today

MUSCAT: The Sultanate, along with the other countries of the world, will today mark the International Day of Older Persons which falls on October 1 every year. On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 the International Day of Older Persons to draw the world attention to the problems suffered by the people over the age of 60. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the number of elderly population in the Sultanate has reached 145,450 by mid-2016 which accounts for 6 per cent of the total Omani population. The number of people over the age of 60 is expected to reach 170,614 by the year 2020 constituting 6.2 per cent of the total Omani population. — ONA
