Muscat, Dec 22 - The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has ordered the immediate withdrawal from Muttrah Souq some souvenirs featuring Oman following complaints of major discrepancies in them. In a social media post, Dr Mohammed al Shuaili said: “These products are sold in most gift shops in Muttrah Souq. Oman’s name has been painted in national colours, but some symbols from another country have been mixed up with important landmarks in the Sultanate. We ask the authorities concerned to address this issue.” Taking cognizance of the matter, the ministry responded, “We have contacted the ministry concerned and the inspection teams have visited the stores in the Muttrah Souq. The products have been withdrawn. Thank you for your concern and cooperation.”

According to a citizen, there are a few other products in the market with discrepancies. “If the product is made in the Sultanate, the authorities must take action against the owner of the factory so that we can present the right product to the tourists. If imported, it must be thoroughly checked before it is cleared by the authorities.” Recently, MoCI called for strict adherence to the standards of Omani dagger. The standard specifications for Omani dagger is binding, whether it is made for wearing or use as souvenirs. Standards have also been defined for Omani dagger and its related components.
