The Royal Hospital has warned of an increase in cases of Covid-19 infection and admission of patients in wards and intensive care units (ICUs) in the health institutions in the Sultanate.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) on Wednesday reported 190 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of cases registered in the Sultanate to 136,377.

Twenty-five patients were hospitalised during the past 24 hours, taking the total number of inpatients in hospitals to 154, including 50 in intensive care units (ICUs).

“This increase calls for all of us to resume preparations to deal with any increments or other waves to come, and to activate the steps specified in the standard work document to resume our services,” said Qasim bin Ahmed al Salmi, director-general of the Royal Hospital.

The infection control team and all the supportive teams in the hospital will work diligently in the national centres, departments, and hospital departments, and we will use our experience and strength to support the Sultanate’s health system, to overcome any upcoming challenges related to Covid-19, he said.

Royal Hospital said it has started a campaign to vaccinate the health cadres and more than 600 of its staff have been vaccinated. “We expect to vaccinate more, consecutively, soon.”

Al Salmi said that pandemic had led to the collapse of the health and economic systems of developed countries, with enormous resources.

“I thank you for your sincere efforts and your noble sacrifices to support the hospital, support the health system of the Sultanate, and enable it to deal with the requirements of a pandemic that the world has not seen for more than a hundred years,” he said in a statement.

Al Salmi added, “With your dedication and sacrifices, we witnessed a significant decline in the previous wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the numbers of patients in intensive care departments and wards decreased, and we were able to start resuming some of our services to excellent rates, in accordance with the standard document for the safe resumption of health services, which you drafted.”

He said, “We must stress on examining patients coming to the hospital to obtain our various services and make sure that they do not have symptoms of infection.”

The national campaign to immunise health personnel and the population will continue and will help to witness the end of this pandemic and this challenge soon, he said.

The MoH also reported one Covid-19-related death, bringing the total death toll to 1,537.

The total recovery cases reached 128, 255, which is 94 per cent of the total cases reported.
