ROP warns against fake messages on ATM cards

MUSCAT, JAN 6 - The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has warned against responding to fake messages doing the rounds on social media on ATM cards.
Phishing messages are said to have been asking people to call a number if they want their ATM cards to function properly. “Ignore such messages on social media or calls claiming to be from a telecom company,” a senior official told the Observer. “Report such messages or calls at the nearest police station.”
These messages apparently said his/her ATM card had been blocked because the account-holder has not updated the same, and the card would be cancelled if the recipient didn’t call the given number immediately.
“These messages are not from the bank. Don’t dial the number; just ignore or report the same to the nearest police station,” the ROP official said.
He also said a bank or money exchange will contact you directly and not send messages if you have won a cash prize.
