Road accidents fell by 39.8 pc

MUSCAT: The Sultanate has seen a fall in road accidents by 39.8 per cent at the end of April. The number of accidents recorded till April stood at 797, compared to 1,323 accidents during the same period in 2017, according to the latest statistics issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information, based on the initial data from the Royal Oman Police (ROP). In April, 25.5 per cent of accidents occurred in the Governorate of Muscat, followed by 16 per cent in North Al Batinah and Al Dakhiliyah, 10 per cent in Dhofar, while the rest of governorates accounted for 32.5 per cent of the accidents.


The statistics showed that equal number of accidents occurred during day and night. Until the end of April, road accidents resulted in 203 deaths and 926 injuries, compared to 202 deaths and 1,024 injuries during the same period in 2017. Of the total dead, 121 were Omanis (110 men and 11 women). Eighty-two expatriates were reported dead in road incidents during the same period, 74 of them were men and 8 women. As far as the injured are concerned, 627 of them were Omanis (444 men and 183 women), and 299 were expatriates (274 men and 25 women). — ONA
