OOC approves participation in Asian Games 2018

MUSCAT: The Board of Directors of Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) held on Wednesday its first meeting for this year under the chairmanship of Shaikh Khalid bin Muhammad al Zubair, OOC Board Chairman; and in the presence of board members. The meeting reviewed the ongoing preparations for participation in the 18th Asian Games scheduled to be held in the two cities of Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia, from August 18 to September 2. The official delegation to this event was set up under the chairmanship of the OOC chairman. The meeting approved the initial participation of the national associations, which expressed their interest, namely athletics, swimming, shooting, football, beach volleyball, tennis, sailing, hockey, weight lifting and paragliding.
Shaikh Khalid congratulated the sports associations and committees for the positive results achieved over her past year and recognised their cooperation and response in the best interest of Omani sport.
Al Zubair hailed the efforts made by the General Secretariat of OOC and supporting committees and the executive management over the past year and called on them to exert yet further cooperation and efforts in order to boost the roles assigned to them. He referred to several hostings made by OOC of a number of international and regional meetings and conferences such as the OCA Regional Forum, IOC Olympic Solidarity meeting, meetings of West and South Asia National Olympic Committees and the 48th CAS meeting and the meeting of the Regional Anti-Doping Organisation for GCC and Yemen (Rado).
He also commended the staging of several events which would enrich Omani sports such as the Olympic Day and the seminar under the theme ‘Sports for an Active Society’ held in cooperation with the Majlis Ash’shura last October.
He further commended the achievement made by the Omani national football team by winning the 23rd Arabian Gulf Cup held in Kuwait in January this year. He said the winning of this championship comes due to the significant support and efforts made by the Oman Football Association and the technical staff along with the Omani fans.
The meeting fixed March 25 as a date for convening the next OOC Ordinary General Assembly.
