MUSCAT: The Sultanate has banned the import of asbestos goods and products.

Dr Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, Minister of Commerce and Industry, issued a ministerial decision No 139/2017 prohibiting its import.

Constant human exposure to asbestos leads to health problems.

The decision comes after the examination of goods and products by the Directorate-General for Standardisation and Metrology in cooperation with the Public Authority for Consumer Protection.

Results showed the samples did not comply with the standard specifications and contained asbestos that was harmful to health.

Any individual who violates provisions of the ministerial decision shall be liable to pay an administrative fine of RO 500. The fine will be doubled in case of repeated violations. — ONA
