MUSCAT: Ten students of Indian School Al Ghubra, Manya Mediratta, Amisha Mehta, Sowparna Sreekumar, Suchi Smita Singh, Unnati Ashar, Fathima Mohammad Sareena, Somalika Chhabra, Lakshana Raghuraman, Mehul Sancheti and Anish K Badri attended the WFUNA International Model United Nations Conference at Agra from April 29 to May 3. Somalika Chhabra was elected the Chair of the General Assembly.

The student delegates participated in enlightening debates in which they discussed some of the most pressing issues faced by the world today. During the opening ceremony the delegates were addressed by Derk Segaar, Director of the United Nations Information Centre in New Delhi. Segaar spoke about the importance of United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, which was the theme of the conference.

The delegates also got an opportunity to be trained by Bill Yotive, who developed the UN4MUN procedure at the United Nations Department of Public Information. A leadership forum was conducted by Dr Sonam Mansukhani of The Flame University, Pune and a talk by Shubha Sekhar enlightened them about liberal education.

Throughout the conference the students were engrossed in thoughtful discussions and intense negotiations to reach a solution to world problems through consensus. At the Closing Ceremony, Manya Mediratta of ISG was presented the Diplomacy Award. Amisha Mehta and Sowparna Sreekumar also received honourable mention. An inspiring speech by the Chief Guest, Sundeep Bhutoria, the UN4MUN Treasurer marked the end of the four-day conference.

A visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Parliament House in New Delhi further enhanced this enjoyable and enlightening trip. The students gained valuable insight into world affairs and learnt many life lessons on leadership and conflict resolution.
