ESO unveils winners of inter-college public speaking competition

Muscat: The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) in association with the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) organised Oman’s 6th Inter-College Environmental Public Speaking Competition (ICEPSC) under the patronage of Mohammed bin Salim al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs. The competition concluded with four teams claiming victory in the highly anticipated two-day event. With 40 teams from 21 colleges and universities across Oman, participants were challenged with tackling several environmental issues to outline the importance of sustainability. The winning teams will now represent the Sultanate in the upcoming ICEPSC regional event, set to be held in the Emirate of


Dubai from the 27th-28th of November 2017.


Jawaher al Ghafri, ESO’s education co-ordinator, said, “For six consecutive years, this event has served as a forum for the next generation of Oman’s thought-leaders to express new ideas that could potentially transform the way we engage and preserve our natural environment.


“It is truly remarkable that we have been able to elevate this competition year on year, and I would like to thank all our sponsors, supporters, and participants for enabling us to organise another successful event.”


The winners are College of Applied Sciences, Sohar for ‘People and the Planet: Finding a Sustainable Balance’; Ibri College of Technology for ‘Quality Education: Roadmap to Sustainable Development’; Sultan Qaboos University for ‘The Future of Power’, and Awen representing the Sultan Qaboos University for ‘Sustainable Food Systems-Understanding Food Security’.


Stephen Kelly, President and General Manager of Occidental of Oman, said, “Oxy is committed to the preservation and sustainability of habitats and biodiversity through efficient use of energy, land, water and other natural resources of the countries in which we operate. We believe that sustainable and long-term success can be achieved by providing the next generations with a first-class education that widens the horizons of creativity and innovation.”


Ghada Mohammed Al Yousef, Executive Manager — Group Communications and Sustainability in Nama Group, said: “The Group has always supported ESO in many projects and this competition serves the environmental pillar of Nama Group’s sustainability policy. We intend to highlight the topic of Future of Power and receive the youth thoughts on methods to sustain this significant concept.


“Our sponsorship of the competition is part of the efforts have been made to implement and maintain Nama Group strategy amongst the participants for-lasting-prosperity. It is worth mentioning that we are always committed to contribute to the Omani youth development through Nama sustainable initiatives.”
