Sultanate thrash Qatar 4-1 in penalties

By Anuroop Athiparambath — MUSCAT: Jan 28 - Oman beat Qatar 4-1 in penalties in the final of second CISM World Cup football championship to lift the crown at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Saturday. For Oman, Saud Saud Khamis al Farsi, Jameeel Darwish al Mashari, Saad Suhail and Mohsin Jawhar al Khawaldi scored in the penalty shoot-out. Qatar’s Dasilva Michel’s shot went over the bar and same did Ngom Abdoulakhad. Only Moreira Jean netted for them. Earlier, during the extra-time Saud Khamis al Farsi had missed a golden chance of the match for Oman, when his weak shot after a fine pass by Jameel Darwish al Mashari was comfortably saved by Qatar goalkeeper Bamba Adamba in the 115th minute. Saad Suhail had a golden opportunity in the 58th minute, but his shot hit the side post.

In the 42nd minute, Qatar’s Dasilva Michel got yellow card for a rough tackle on Jameel Darwish al Yahmadi. In the 36th minute, Oman had a shot at goal. Yaseen Khalil al Siyadi’s free-kick went straight to the hands of the goalkeeper. The free kick was awarded when Qasim Said was fouled by Abdallah Saoud. Gen Sultan bin Mohammed al Numani, Minister of the Royal Office, was the chief guest for the evening. Shiakh Saad bin Mohammed bin Said al Mardouf al Saadi, Minister of Sports Affairs, and some Qatari delegation were also present. Earlier, at the Seeb Sports Stadium, Syria beat Egypt in penalties 6-5 to take the third place. At full time, both teams were locked in a 2-2 draw.
