Another legendary star is soon coming to the Royal Opera House Muscat — Gilberto Gil. Often referred to as “The Soul of Brazil”, Gilberto Gil, Brazil’s multiple Grammy Award-winning singer, guitarist, songwriter, and former minister of culture, is known for his intelligently innovative music, deep musicality and quiet charisma. His music incorporates an eclectic range of genres with influences from Brazilian bossa nova and samba to American rock, African music and reggae. In a career spanning five decades and with over fifty albums, Gilberto Gil has played a key role in the modern development of both Brazilian and World Music.

Gil’s deeply rooted music heralds a beloved tropical land and the culture and festivities to which it gave rise. The first instrument Gilberto heard was the clarinet at a patron saint’s festival. It was a clarion call for the young boy who would find his way to the guitar. He remembers: “I knew that music was my language, really. That the music would take me to know the world …because I thought I had the music of the land and the music of heaven. “

Gilberto Gil fulfilled his mission of coming to know the world through music. In 1999 he was recognised by Unesco as an Artist for Peace. Among the many other international awards conferred on this great musician are France’s Légion d’Honneur and Sweden’s Polar Music Prize.

The legendary Gilberto Gil will perform at the Royal Opera House Muscat on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 7:00 pm. For further information and booking consult the ROHM website: www.rohmuscat.org.om
