Oman national team’s star striker Abdulaziz al Muqbali slammed a superb hat-trick as leaders Al Suwaiq thumped Al Shabab 3-1 to extend their dominance in the Omantel League on Wednesday. Ishad Obaid struck the only consolation goal for Al Shabab, who now trail Al Suwaiq by nine points with the latter moving to 44 points.
“Thanks to our players who perform all the tasks and responsibilities during the match. Our match against Al Shabab was the main match since Al Shabab was positioned in the second place,” Hakeem Shaker, head coach of Al Suwaiq, said.
“I believe we are on the right track to clinch the league title. We have to focus more in the remaining matches,” Shaker added.
Meanwhile, in the Southern Oman derby at Salalah Sports Complex, HM Cup champions Al Nasr edged Dhofar 3-2.
Former champions Dhofar, who are currently at the 13th place with 16 points, are in danger of being relegated to the first division and will have to pull up their socks in the remaining games.
Saham missed a great opportunity to grab three points against Al Salam when they failed to convert a penalty in the 82nd minute of their match that finally ended in a goalless draw.
In some other games of the day, Mirbat piled on the misery for Sohar as they edged them 2-1 at Salalah Youth Complex. Sohar is close to relegation and positioned in the last place with 16 points.
Muscat registered a come-from-behind a 2-2 draw against neighbours Oman Club in the last five minutes of the capital derby match at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.
Fanja snatched a 1-0 victory over Al Oruba by a goal scored by Mazin al Saadi in the first minute of stoppage time. This victory helped Fanja jump to sixth place with 22 points in the league table while Al Oruba remain in the fifth place with 25 points.
Al Nahdha strengthened its presence in the top four as they outplayed Al Mudhaibi 3-1 at Al Buraimi Sports Complex,
Al Mudhaibi (19), Saham (18), Oman club (17), Dhofar (16) and Sohar (16) are the bottom five clubs who face relegation.
