MUSCAT, JAN 2 - Starting in April 2019, Sri Lankan Airlines will be flying to Kannur, the newest airport in the Indian state of Kerala, from Muscat via Colombo, said Sharuka Wickrama Adittiya, the airline’s country manager.
“We have been evaluating the market, fares and competition and the like before we could obtain the necessary permission and take off to Kannur,” Sharuka told the Observer on phone from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka.
The documentation, which is under process, will take a month or two for completion, he said.
“There has been a huge demand for flight services to Kannur. We will be connecting other parts of the Middle East as well with Kannur. We have other countries from this region to be connected and all will commence prior to summer this year,” said Sharuka.
Weekly or alternate day services will be offered on Airbus 320, which can accommodate 150 passengers. Services will be Muscat-Colombo-Kannur and Kannur-Colombo-Muscat.
Sri Lanka’s national carrier has, in response to a growing demand from the region, recently boosted its services with daily flights to Colombo from Muscat, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, Riyadh, Bahrain and Kuwait.
