MUSCAT, OCT 31
Masirah made an emphatic start to the 2026–27 Oman Basketball League, defeating Salalah 63–25 at the secondary hall of the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher to collect their first two points of the campaign.
A commanding opening quarter and a dominant third period laid the foundations for the victory, with Masirah combining quick transitions, efficient finishing and disciplined defending to keep their opponents under pressure throughout the contest.
The competition features five clubs: Al Bashayer, Seeb, Nizwa, Salalah and Masirah. For Masirah, the opening result provided an encouraging platform, while Salalah were left to reflect on the attacking difficulties that prevented them from mounting a sustained challenge.
Masirah immediately took control, pressing the ball carrier and moving swiftly towards the basket. Their intensity disrupted Salalah’s attempts to organise their offence and helped establish a substantial advantage before the first break.
With Salalah restricted to six points, Masirah scored 22 to finish the opening quarter 16 points clear. That early cushion allowed them to maintain control even as their opponents became more competitive in the second period.
Salalah showed greater attacking purpose before the interval, improving their scoring and finding a better rhythm. However, Masirah continued to manage the game effectively, adding 10 points against Salalah’s eight to extend their lead to 32–14 at half-time.
Any prospect of a recovery faded in the third quarter, when Masirah produced their most decisive spell. Exploiting the space available and maintaining their attacking tempo, they scored 24 points while limiting Salalah to just two.
The emphatic 24–2 quarter pushed the score to 56–16 and stretched the margin to 40 points, putting the outcome beyond doubt with one period remaining. Across the first and third quarters combined, Masirah outscored Salalah 46–8, underlining the importance of those two passages to the final result.
Salalah responded with an improved offensive showing in the closing quarter, scoring nine points to Masirah’s seven. Although they won the final period, the deficit was too large to threaten Masirah’s advantage.
The final whistle confirmed a convincing 38-point victory for Masirah, whose strong defensive performance was matched by their ability to turn opportunities into points. Salalah’s more competitive second and fourth quarters offered some encouragement, but their limited returns in the other two periods proved costly in a difficult opening appearance of the new league season against an organised Masirah.
