LONDON: Oman and the United Kingdom have signed an agreement for a £1-billion artificial intelligence data centre project in Salalah. The deal involves UK-founded infrastructure investment firm Yamna developing the large-scale AI data centre in Salalah. The project’s first phase will exceed £1 billion. The agreement, which was signed by officials of Yamna and Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, will accelerate the development of large-scale AI and hyperscale data centre infrastructure in Oman.
The agreement represents an important step in advancing Salalah Al Khadra Digital.
The proposed development adds to Oman's wider efforts to attract investment in the computing infrastructure needed to support enterprise AI, cloud services and advanced digital applications.
For Oman, a large-scale data centre in Salalah could strengthen the country's position in the regional digital economy and attract further investment into technology-related infrastructure. The project's eventual impact will depend on its implementation, including access to power, network connectivity, financing and demand from AI and cloud customers.
At this stage, the available public announcements do not disclose a megawatt capacity or detailed infrastructure specifications. They also do not establish whether the facility will primarily serve domestic customers, international businesses, or a combination of both.
The proposed investment should therefore be understood as a significant infrastructure plan rather than evidence that new AI computing capacity is already operational.
