MUSCAT, OCT 12
Oman's junior golfers have received official recognition following a landmark performance at the Arab Junior and Age Group Golf Championship in Cairo, where the national team secured two gold medals and a silver to achieve one of its most notable results on the regional stage.
Jaber bin Mohammed al Shabibi, Director of National Teams Affairs and head of the Athletes Preparation System Project, welcomed the Omani Golf Association (OGA) delegation, led by Vice-President Fayez Mohammed Riyadh, in recognition of the team's outstanding achievement.
During the reception, Al Shabibi conveyed the congratulations of Basil bin Ahmed al Rawas, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Sports and Youth, praising the players for their performances and their contribution to raising Oman's profile in Arab sport.
He said the results represented an important addition to the country's sporting achievements and reflected the efforts invested in developing national talent. He also commended the players, technical staff and administrators for their work, expressing hope that the success would provide a platform for further accomplishments in upcoming competitions.
AL WAHIBI LEADS GOLD-MEDAL CHARGE
Ahmed bin Khalil al Wahibi emerged as the standout performer in Cairo, winning the individual gold medal in the under-21 category before joining team-mate Adam bin Masoud al Barwani to claim a second gold in the team competition.
The double gold highlighted Oman's competitiveness in the championship and underlined the progress made by its young golfers through preparation and international exposure.
Promising youngster Yousef bin Azzan al Rumhi added to the medal tally by securing silver in the individual under-13 category. His podium finish provided further evidence of the depth of emerging talent in Omani golf and offered encouragement for the sport's long-term development.
The three-medal haul, comprising two golds and a silver, marked a significant achievement for the delegation and strengthened Oman's presence in regional junior golf.
AL WAHIBI CREDITS COLLECTIVE SUPPORT
Speaking at the reception, Al Wahibi expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY) for its continued support of athletes and its commitment to nurturing national talent. He also praised the Omani Golf Association for its role in preparing players and providing the conditions necessary for them to compete successfully.
The gold medallist highlighted the contribution of his family throughout his sporting journey, stressing that encouragement, confidence and consistent support were essential to his progress.
He also acknowledged the families of his team-mates, whose commitment and motivation helped the young golfers maintain their training and prepare for competition.
Al Wahibi said the achievement was the result of a collective effort involving the ministry, the association, technical and administrative teams and families. He added that the Arab titles should serve as motivation to pursue greater ambitions rather than mark the end of the team's aspirations.
The achievement reinforces the importance of cooperation between sports authorities, the national association and families in identifying promising players and creating an environment in which they can develop.
For the Omani Golf Association, the results provide fresh impetus to strengthen player-development programmes and expand overseas participation, with the aim of improving the country's competitiveness at Gulf, Arab and continental levels.
Oman's performance in Cairo demonstrates the potential of its emerging golfers and the value of sustained investment in youth development, as the team looks to build on its historic medal haul and pursue further success in future championships.
