MUSCAT: September was hotter than usual across several parts of Oman, with average temperatures exceeding long-term levels by up to 1.4°C, according to the Civil Aviation Authority. Al Buraimi recorded the highest monthly average among the six stations listed, at 35.9°C, while Dhalkut in Dhofar topped the rainfall figures with 73.4 mm.

Average temperatures at six weather stations in Oman were above their long-term September averages in 2026, with Al Rustaq and Al Buraimi recording the largest departures at 1.4°C, according to statistics released by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Al Buraimi recorded a monthly average temperature of 35.9°C, while Al Rustaq registered 34.5°C. Both were 1.4°C above their respective long-term averages for September.

Sohar recorded an average of 32°C, exceeding its September average by 1.2°C. Muscat registered 32.1°C and Sur 32.8°C, both 1°C above their long-term averages. Masirah recorded 27.5°C, a departure of 0.6°C.

The figures represent monthly average temperatures rather than the highest temperatures recorded during the month. The CAA explained that a temperature anomaly is the difference between the observed monthly average and the corresponding average calculated from records collected over a long period.

In its rainfall statistics, the authority listed Dhalkut in Dhofar Governorate as recording the highest accumulated rainfall during September, at 73.4 mm.

Qairoon Hairiti followed with 58.6 mm, while Al Hamra recorded 27.8 mm, Saiq 20.2 mm and Salalah 17.6 mm.

The authority also highlighted a historical tropical weather event that affected Oman in September 1979. According to international archives cited by the CAA, the system reached tropical storm intensity before weakening and crossing the coast through Al Wusta Governorate as a tropical depression on September 24 that year.
