A tanker was hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on Monday, citing the vessel's captain.

The strike on Monday evening sparked a fire in the engine room, UKMTO said on social media platform X. There were initially no reports of injuries.

The agency also reported several incidents from previous days. A crude oil tanker was hit above the waterline by an unknown projectile on Saturday. On Sunday, another oil tanker was struck by unidentified projectiles, around two hours after a liquefied natural gas tanker was hit.

Also on Monday, a vessel approaching the Strait of Hormuz was ordered by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to turn around or risk being attacked, UKMTO said, adding that the vessel complied.

Iran's Fars news agency reported on Monday evening that Iran had taken action against 13 vessels over the past seven days.

The Strait of Hormuz has become a key flashpoint in the war between Iran and the United States.

Iran has largely blocked shipping through the key energy route since the war began in late February through threats and attacks on vessels. The US military has also attacked civilian Iranian ships.

The US military has again been enforcing a naval blockade against ships entering or leaving Iranian ports since mid-July.

US forces have so far redirected 130 commercial vessels to enforce the blockade, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on X. Three other ships that refused to comply with US instructions were disabled.

The blockade is aimed at preventing Iranian oil exports and increasing financial pressure on Tehran.
