MUSCAT: Oman’s national age-group golf team will compete in the Arab Golf Championship in Egypt from October 6 to 11, with seven players seeking honours and valuable regional experience.
The championship will take place at Madinaty and Mirage City golf courses, featuring several age categories and girls’ competitions.
Faiz Mohammed Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the Oman Golf Association (OGA), said the squad was well prepared, with training focused on technical, physical and mental readiness, accuracy, course management and decision-making.
“We look forward to a positive participation that reflects our players’ preparations and ambitions. We are confident they can represent Oman with distinction,” he said.
Riaz described young players as the future of Omani golf, stressing the importance of competitive exposure, concentration, discipline and sportsmanship in their development.
Ahmed al Jahdhami, OGA Secretary-General and National Teams Director, said the squad combined experience, talent and ambition despite some players being unavailable because of academic commitments.
Ahmed bin Khalil al Wahaibi and Adam bin Masoud al Barwani bring Gulf championship experience and previous age-group achievements. Yousuf bin Azzan al Rumhi and Taimur bin Ghalib al Busaidy helped secure team bronze in Riaz in 2023, while Ibrahim Fayez Mohammed Riyadh has previously competed at Arab championships.
Mohammed bin Suhail al Junaidi and Ilyas bin Oudi al Junaidi complete the squad.
Faiz Riaz will head the delegation, with Al Jahdhami serving as delegation manager. Coach Jonathan will lead the technical team, assisted by Fahad al Kitani. The delegation will stay at the Mirage City hotel.
Teams arrive on October 6, followed by practice, the technical meeting and the opening ceremony on October 7. Under-14 competitions take place on October 8 and 9, while other categories continue until October 10, when the closing ceremony and prize presentation will be held. Departure is scheduled for October 11.
The event will also feature a Gulf Golf Federation meeting chaired by retired Major General Abdullah al Hashmi. Discussions with participating federation heads will explore cooperation, training camp exchanges and sharing expertise.
Both officials thanked the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for supporting player development and international participation. Riyadh also acknowledged the technical and administrative teams and players’ families.
Al Wahaibi, meanwhile, hopes to build on his recent Asian Games experience in Nagoya, Japan, where a lengthy journey from Muscat and delayed arrival of his clubs disrupted preparations.
Despite those setbacks, he said competing against internationally experienced golfers strengthened his concentration, adaptability and understanding of elite competition.
“I am well prepared technically and physically, and aim to compete for the leading positions and a place on the podium,” he said. “The Asian Games experience has strengthened my determination, and I hope to translate those lessons into a positive result in Egypt.”
