

SALALAH: Fishermen across various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman on Thursday began the fishing season for spiny lobster, locally known as "Sharkha", which will continue until November 30, in accordance with controls regulating fishing operations to contribute to preserving this fisheries wealth and ensuring the sustainability of its stocks.
Spiny lobster, as it is locally known, ranks second among the fisheries resources with the highest economic value after abalone "Al Safilah", as the economic return from its production in the Sultanate of Oman during 2025 reached approximately RO 4.255 million, while production volume reached about 645 tonnes, and the average price per kilogramme stood at around RO 6.601.
Al Wusta Governorate topped lobster production with approximately 288.5 tonnes, representing 44.7 per cent of total production, followed by Dhofar Governorate with about 212.8 tonnes (33 per cent), and Al Sharqiyah South Governorate with around 135.7 tonnes (21.1 per cent), while it is available in limited quantities in the remaining governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
The market value of lobster production in Al Wusta Governorate reached approximately RO 1.757 million, and in Dhofar Governorate around RO 1.705 million, while in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate it reached approximately RO 775,000. - ONA
