MUSCAT, SEPT 21
The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) claimed the overall title at the International Day of University Sport event after topping the standings with 1,144 points.
Sultan Qaboos University finished runner-up with 984 points, while Oman Dental College secured third place with 899 points.
The competition brought together 340 male and female students from nine higher education institutions at Active Oman. Around 300 runners contested the five- and 10-kilometre races, while another 40 students competed in bowling, pistol shooting and golf.
Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, represented by the Directorate-General of Sports Activities, the event was held in cooperation with the Oman Committee for University Sports and the Oman Automobile Association.
The closing ceremony was held under the auspices of Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Shibli, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Higher Education.
Participating institutions included GUtech, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman Dental College, University of Nizwa, Muscat University, University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Middle East College, Oman College of Health Sciences and International Maritime College Oman.
Promising university talent
Zayana al Yaarubi, Director of the Specialised Activities Department at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, said the event reflected the growing importance of university sport and the value of cooperation between the participating organisations.
“We are moving forward through the combined efforts of all partners to give university sport a stronger presence and identity,” she said.
“We have talented male and female students whom we hope to see play a visible role in sport. Sport is a healthy way of life, and participation in these activities benefits them and their future.”
Al Yaarubi said higher education institutions in Oman possess promising sporting talent capable of reaching advanced levels and representing the Sultanate internationally when given suitable training and competitive opportunities.
She added that university competitions help students expand their social connections, develop confidence and strengthen their ability to face challenges.
Competition and interaction
Athari bint Adil al Jabri of Muscat University said the competition allowed her to experience new sports and develop different skills.
She explained that pistol shooting demanded concentration, stability and controlled movement. Her previous bowling experience helped her perform with greater confidence, while golf introduced her to new techniques, including the correct grip and directing the ball towards the target.
Milad Karmi of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences highlighted the importance of sporting events in encouraging students and employees to remain active, particularly when study and work require long hours in front of screens.
Watching athletes perform at different levels could motivate participants to improve their fitness and sporting ability, he said.
“Taking the first step is what matters most. With practice and continued effort, performance improves,” Karmi added.
