With the astronomical beginning of Sarb, the Sultanate of Oman, and Dhofar Governorate in particular, enters a season of unique beauty and calm.
Extending until mid-December, Sarb is characterised by clear skies, moderate temperatures, low humidity and tranquil seas, marking a distinct transition from the misty grandeur of khareef.
More than just a climatic phase, Sarb represents a significant economic, tourism and cultural opportunity that deserves greater national attention.
For decades, the tourism narrative of Dhofar has been rightly dominated by khareef, when the mountains turn green and the governorate attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from within and outside Oman.
However, Sarb offers a different, yet equally compelling proposition. The atmosphere is crystal clear, visibility is high, and the landscape, washed clean by the monsoon, is vibrant.
Coastal areas become ideal for swimming and marine activities, while the desert hinterland of Dhofar, with its golden dunes and star-filled nights, becomes accessible and inviting.
This makes Sarb an ideal season for a more diversified tourism product. It is the perfect time for family tourism, adventure tourism, camping, diving, and cultural festivals.
For domestic tourists and international visitors seeking sun and mild weather as winter sets in across Europe and Asia, Dhofar during Sarb can be a destination of choice. This aligns directly with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, which calls for sustainable tourism development, economic diversification, and year-round tourism activity.
The economic significance of Sarb extends beyond tourism. It is a season of agricultural abundance and economic activity. With the end of the monsoon, farmers in the Dhofar plains begin harvesting seasonal crops.
The frankincense trees, central to Dhofar's heritage and economy, are tended during this period. The calm seas allow fishermen to return to the sea in full force, boosting fish landings and supporting food security.
The moderate weather also provides a vital window for construction, logistics and infrastructure projects that may have slowed during Khareef.
Crucially, Sarb is a season that directly supports small and medium enterprises. Tour guides, owners of guesthouses and chalets, operators of 4x4 vehicles, restaurants, honey and frankincense sellers, and handicraft producers all benefit when tourist activity is extended beyond the two months of khareef.
By lengthening the tourism season to four additional months, we create more sustainable livelihoods and reduce the seasonal nature of employment in the governorate.
To fully realise this potential, a concerted and integrated effort is required. First, there is a need for targeted marketing that positions Sarb as a distinct season, not merely as an aftermath of khareef. A clear identity for Sarb, built around concepts of clarity, serenity, and harvest, can attract a different segment of travellers.
Second, connectivity must be maintained.
The momentum of flights and transport services seen during Khareef should not drop sharply, but be sustained through attractive packages and events.
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, in cooperation with Dhofar Municipality and the private sector, can play a leading role in organising festivals, desert experiences and marine activities during this period.
Third, community empowerment is essential. Training local youth as guides for desert and mountain trails, supporting families to develop agritourism and farm stays, and helping SMEs to market their products will ensure that the benefits of Sarb tourism remain within the local community.
Dhofar is blessed with a unique environmental diversity that few regions in the world possess. It has a monsoon with greenery, and it has Sarb with clarity. If khareef showed Dhofar at its most dramatic, Sarb shows it at its most serene and productive.
Transforming Sarb from a meteorological term into a recognised economic and tourism season will not only support livelihoods in Dhofar but will also strengthen Oman's position as a year-round destination that celebrates its natural diversity in all seasons.
