Munich - The driver of a cleaning company car was seriously injured after crashing into a plane engine at Munich Airport early on Saturday, police said.

The car then struck an unoccupied passenger staircase, a police spokeswoman said. The driver was flown by rescue helicopter to hospital.

The accident occurred at around 3 am (0100 GMT). The aircraft was parked away from the main airport area and no one was on board at the time of the crash.

Initial findings suggested the driver may have suffered a medical problem before the crash, the police spokeswoman said.

An accident analysis is now expected to determine the exact circumstances.

There was no danger to other people at any point, police said, and the accident did not affect flight operations.

Munich Airport has a ban on scheduled night flights between midnight and 5 am.
