PRISTINA: Kosovo's parliament on Sunday approved a new government led by acting prime minister Albin Kurti, ending three months of post-election deadlock, but with political instability expected to continue in Europe's youngest democracy.
The cabinet, dominated by members of Kurti's Vetevendosje (Self-determination) party, was backed by 62 lawmakers in the 120-seat assembly, parliamentary speaker Albulena Haxhiu said.
Kosovo has been roiled by political instability because Kurti's party needs opposition support to secure the two-thirds majority required to elect a president.
Every time parliament fails to elect a president, a new snap poll must be called.
Kurti's party has come on top in three legislative elections held since February 2025, including two snap polls — in December 2025 and June 2026, but has so far failed to garner enough support to elect the head of state.
In a speech delivered before the vote, Kurti assured that social issues would be among the priorities of his new cabinet and said that obtaining EU candidate status remained the "main objective ... and the top strategic priority."
Kosovo, one of Europe's poorest economies, is lagging on EU reforms due to the political crisis, putting it at risk of losing some pre-accession funds.
