Oman’s international basketball referee Essam al Siyabi has brought the curtain down on a distinguished 19-year officiating career, ending a journey that carried Omani refereeing to Gulf, Arab, Asian and world competitions.
Al Siyabi announced his retirement while still active on the international stage. Since earning his international badge in 2014, he officiated 93 international matches and participated in five age-group Fiba World Cup tournaments, establishing himself as one of Oman’s most prominent basketball officials.
One of the defining moments of his career came in July 2025, when he was selected to officiate the Fiba Women’s Asia Cup final between Australia and Japan in Shenzhen, China. The appointment placed an Omani referee at the heart of one of the continent’s most prestigious basketball fixtures. Al Siyabi was part of the three-member refereeing crew for the final, which Australia won 88-79.
His final overseas assignment came during the opening round of the Fiba Asia Cup 2029 Pre-Qualifiers, providing a fitting conclusion to a career marked by consistency and a sustained presence at major international tournaments.
Announcing his decision, Al Siyabi said the time had come to devote more attention to his family, professional career and academic journey.
“I entered this sport with love and leave it with even greater gratitude,” he said in his farewell message, thanking his colleagues, friends and everyone who supported him throughout his career.
Al Siyabi also expressed his desire to provide greater opportunities for a new generation of Omani referees to gain international experience and progress towards major continental and global competitions. His decision reflects an ambition to ensure that Oman’s presence in international basketball officiating continues through emerging national talent.

The Oman Basketball Association paid tribute to Al Siyabi’s contribution, describing him as a distinguished representative of Omani refereeing whose career combined experience, discipline and passion. The association highlighted his 19 years of service, 93 international appearances and wide-ranging involvement in leading competitions.
His retirement closes an important chapter in Omani basketball, but the pathway he established remains open for those seeking to follow in his footsteps. The challenge for the next generation will be to maintain Oman’s presence on the international stage and secure further opportunities for Omani referees at major tournaments.
