The three-day Zad: Promising Omani Leaders Initiative, organised by the Royal Academy of Management (RAM) in partnership with the Ministry of Education, concluded on Saturday at the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech), bringing together Omani students preparing to pursue higher education abroad.
The initiative seeks to prepare students not only academically but also personally and culturally, equipping them with leadership skills, practical life skills and the confidence to adapt to new environments while representing Oman and its values overseas.
The programme forms part of a national effort to invest in young Omani talent and strengthen students’ readiness for overseas study. Its inaugural edition is supporting around 550 students pursuing government-sponsored scholarships, other scholarship opportunities and approved self-funded study pathways.
Dr Ali bin Qassim al Lawati, President of RAM, said studying abroad represents more than an academic journey, describing it as a formative experience that requires personal maturity, leadership readiness and cultural awareness.
Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Shibli, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Higher Education, said the initiative goes beyond academic preparation by developing students’ leadership abilities, practical knowledge and life skills.
He also highlighted the students’ responsibility to represent Oman and its identity while studying overseas.
Salma bint Ibrahim al Wahibi, Supervisor of the initiative, stressed the importance of supporting students as they transition from school to university, particularly as they prepare to live independently and navigate unfamiliar academic and cultural environments.
During the three-day programme, students participated in courses, workshops and interactive activities designed to prepare them for life and study abroad.
The first day included registration, a campus tour, the official launch of the initiative, a photo session and accommodation arrangements. The second day focused on practical skills and personal readiness, while the final day centred on national identity, student engagement and preparing participants to represent Oman confidently overseas.
Students also shared their experiences of the programme.
Jana bint Fahad al Balushi, who is preparing to study in Britain, said the initiative provided valuable lessons in communication, financial management and personal responsibility.
Issa al Hajri said the sessions addressed practical situations students may encounter abroad, including accessing healthcare, dealing with authorities, interacting with different communities and understanding cultural differences while maintaining their Omani identity.
Al Sharif al Sarmi described Zad as valuable preparation for life abroad, particularly in helping students understand issues related to visas, accommodation, government services and adapting to new cultures.
Following the three-day programme, Zad will continue through virtual sessions and activities over the next 11 months, providing students with ongoing development and support throughout their first year of overseas study.
