MUSCAT: The International Handball Federation IHF has highlighted the exceptional natural and climatic advantages of Salalah as key factors behind Oman’s successful bid to host the 2028 IHF Beach Handball World Championship for men and women.
According to the IHF, the distinctive atmosphere of Salalah and the wider Dhofar Governorate during the Khareef season in July played an important role in strengthening Oman’s hosting credentials. The city’s natural surroundings, combined with modern infrastructure, diverse accommodation options and transport facilities, provide favourable conditions for staging a major international sporting event.
Salalah will host the championship from July 3 to 8, marking another significant milestone for Omani sport and reinforcing Oman's growing reputation as a destination capable of organising major international events.
The IHF also noted that the World Championship will return to Oman after it previously hosted the event in 2012 at the Al Musannah Sports City. The Salalah edition will be the third Beach Handball World Championship to be staged in Asia, following the 2024 edition in the People’s Republic of China, reflecting the sport’s expanding global reach and growing popularity.
Preparations for the tournament will include the development of four competition courts and two additional courts for training and warm-up sessions. The main venue will have a capacity of approximately 2,000 spectators, providing an appropriate setting for fans and participating national teams.
High-quality white sand sourced from the coastal areas of Dhofar will also be used for the courts to ensure the best possible playing conditions and meet the technical standards required by the International Handball Federation.
As part of its early preparations for the 2028 World Championship, and reflecting the strong partnership and mutual confidence between the Oman Handball Association and the IHF, Oman will also host the finals of the IHF Beach Handball Global Tour in 2026 and 2027.
Hosting these events is expected to provide valuable organisational and technical experience for Omani officials and further strengthen the country’s readiness for the World Championship in 2028.
Beyond the sporting significance of the event, the championship is expected to enhance Oman’s presence on the international sporting map while promoting Dhofar and Salalah as distinctive sports and tourism destinations. With its unique natural landscape, exceptional Khareef climate, modern facilities and experience in hosting international events, Salalah is set to provide a distinctive stage for one of beach handball’s most important global competitions.
