MUSCAT, AUGUST 22

Oman’s national basketball team is continuing preparations in Dubai after registering three wins from the opening three friendly matches as part of its build-up to the FIBA Asia Cup 2029 Pre-Qualifiers.

The national team has been in Dubai since August 16 as part of their final preparation programme ahead of the first round of the continental pre-qualifiers, with the coaching staff focusing on physical and technical readiness, tactical organisation and greater cohesion among the players.

Under national head coach Mohammed al Owaisi, Oman have so far played three friendly matches during the camp and emerged victorious in all three.

The national team opened their friendly programme with a 56-52 win over Sharjah Club before edging Maxreem Academy 55-53 in a closely fought second encounter. Oman then maintained their perfect run with a 64-58 victory over JAM Sports Academy.

The friendly matches form a key part of the team’s preparations, allowing the coaching staff to assess the players in competitive situations and experiment with different combinations and tactical approaches.

They have also allowed the players to improve their understanding on court and adapt to the demands of closely contested matches ahead of the official qualifiers.

FOURTH FRIENDLY ON SUNDAY

Oman will play their fourth friendly match of the Dubai camp on Sunday when they face Maxreem Academy for a second time.

The encounter will provide another test for the squad and allow Al Owaisi and his technical staff to evaluate the progress made during the camp, while addressing any technical areas that require further attention before the Asian campaign begins.

The team continues daily training in Dubai, focusing on improving collective performance, maintaining concentration and sharpening the tactics developed in earlier preparation.

The Dubai camp follows a domestic training phase in which the coaching staff concentrated on improving the players’ physical conditioning and technical abilities while building greater cohesion within the squad.

Oman’s external camp is scheduled to conclude on August 24 before the team switches its full focus to the FIBA Asia Cup 2029 Pre-Qualifiers First Round.

OMAN IN GROUP A

Oman have been drawn in Group A of the Western Region alongside hosts UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Nepal. The group will be played in a single round-robin format in Dubai, with each team playing four matches and the top three progressing to the second round of the pre-qualifiers.

The Group A matches are scheduled from August 26 to 31 as Oman seek to secure one of the three qualifying places and continue their journey towards the FIBA Asia Cup 2029.

With three wins already secured during the preparatory camp, the national team will be aiming to make the most of Sunday’s final friendly and the remaining training sessions before turning their attention to the competitive challenge ahead.
