MUSCAT: The Oman Cancer Association (OCA), in collaboration with young Oman national team golfer Mohib al Kathiri, will organise the Mohib La Vie Charity Golf Classic on October 3, at La Vie Golf Course at Tivoli Hotel. The event will form part of OCA’s October Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities and aims to raise funds for cancer patients and their families while promoting awareness of prevention and early detection.

The initiative was launched by 16-year-old Mohib al Kathiri, a Grade 11 student and national team golfer, who was inspired by his personal experience with cancer following the death of his grandmother. Witnessing her battle with the disease encouraged him to use his passion for golf to support patients, particularly children, and contribute to greater awareness of cancer.

“The idea came from my desire to combine golf with cancer awareness, especially after my experience with my grandmother, who battled the disease before it returned,” Mohib said. “I saw her struggle and how bravely she fought, and that made me feel that I should use my sport to make a positive contribution by helping cancer patients and children and providing them with the support they need.”

He added: “I hope this tournament will help raise donations for cancer patients, strengthen the work of the Oman Cancer Association and increase awareness and education about the disease and the importance of early detection. For me, this initiative is a humanitarian message before it is a sporting event.”

The tournament is expected to attract 72 golfers from Oman and abroad, including members of the Oman national team and internationally ranked players. The competition will be played in a four-person Scramble format, bringing together golfers from different backgrounds in support of the charitable cause.

Following the competition, a closing ceremony will be held for senior guests, community figures and invited participants, with around 300 people expected to attend. The programme will include the presentation of prizes and gifts, as well as a charity auction, with all proceeds directed towards charitable activities and support for cancer patients.

Dr Wahid bin Ali al Kharousi, President of the Oman Cancer Association, welcomed Mohib’s initiative, describing it as an inspiring example of how young Omanis can use their talents to create a positive social impact. He also expressed appreciation to La Vie, Tivoli Hotel and the Oman Golf Association for their support.

The event will bring together the golf, business and wider community around a common humanitarian cause, while supporting OCA’s efforts to assist cancer patients and their families and reinforce breast cancer awareness messages throughout October.
