AL HAMRA: The tourism sector in the Sultanate of Oman has witnessed remarkable engagement from the youth, leveraging local resources to deliver innovative tourism experiences that reflect the nation's cultural identity. Numerous youth-led projects have succeeded in presenting tourism models that seamlessly blend recreation and entertainment with the preservation of cultural heritage.
In a move that further enriches the tourism experience, "Al Misfah House of Honey", in the village of Misfat Al Abriyeen in the Wilayat of Al Hamra, has emerged as a distinctive attraction that introduces visitors to Oman's heritage in beekeeping and authentic local products. With the growing tourist footfall in Misfat Al Abriyeen, the establishment has become an essential stop on visitors' itineraries, offering insights into traditional mountain beekeeping practices and showcasing the superior quality of Omani honey. Through an interactive experience that underscores the deep connection between this heritage and Oman's natural environment, the project significantly enhances the appeal of rural tourism across the Sultanate of Oman.
Ali bin Mohammed al Abri, the founder, noted that the apiary was established in 2015, coinciding with the rising number of visitors to Misfat Al Abriyeen. The primary objective was to familiarise tourists with the traditional beekeeping heritage of mountainous regions through comprehensive explanations of breeding and production methods, alongside a curated display of Omani honey products.
Al Abri further explained that the apiary currently houses approximately 340 beehives, encompassing both modern hives, wooden boxes, and traditional palm-trunk hives — a model that harmoniously blends ancestral and contemporary beekeeping techniques. The facility offers a diverse range of natural honey varieties, including Samr (Acacia) honey, Sidr (Ziziphus) honey, and herb honey, in addition to distinctive seasonal productions. Annually, beehives are transported to Dhofar Governorate during the flowering season of frankincense trees in April to produce Omani frankincense honey, which enjoys strong demand among visitors. Additionally, a number of hives are relocated to Ras Al Hadd in the Wilayat of Sur for the production of mangrove honey, renowned for its superior quality and unique flavour profile.
In 2025, the project underwent significant product development with the introduction of an array of naturally flavoured honey varieties, including thyme, clove, ginger, rose, saffron, and cinnamon — aimed at diversifying visitor options and catering to a wide spectrum of palates.
In 2026, the project achieved a qualitative leap with its relocation to a new location overlooking Misfat Al Abriyeen village, accompanied by an expansion of its product line to include palm molasses and select therapeutic apiculture-derived products. The site now offers guided tours within the apiary, granting visitors firsthand exposure to beekeeping methodologies, the opportunity to observe hive inspections under expert supervision, and the chance to capture commemorative photographs — an experience that seamlessly integrates education, entertainment, and direct engagement.
Al Abri affirmed that during the tourist season, which extends from September through April, the project welcomes between 2,000 and 2,500 visitors weekly, with numbers peaking during November and December.
"Al Misfah House of Honey" has become a cornerstone of the tourism programmes organised by travel companies for visitors to Misfat Al Abriyeen. It offers guests a detailed exposition on bee biology and honey production stages, along with complimentary tastings of various honey types. This interactive dimension has significantly elevated the visitor experience, exemplifying a successful community-based tourism enterprise that harnesses local resources and traditional heritage to enrich tourist engagement and invigorate the tourism movement in Misfat Al Abriyeen — further cementing its status as one of the premier tourist destinations in the Sultanate of Oman.
