NRAA's archives open to public during Khareef

SALALAH: Oman’s rich documentary heritage is reaching a wider audience as the National Records and Archives Authority (NRAA) showcases thousands of historical records at the Return of the Past site in Al Saadah during the Khareef Dhofar season.

The exhibition, titled 'A Nation’s Memory in the Land of Frankincense,' is bringing the country’s archives beyond traditional research institutions and into a public setting, allowing citizens, residents and tourists to explore Oman’s historical records.

Hatim bin Abdulkarim bin Ali Al Shahi, Cultural Activity Specialist at the Authority, said the exhibition is attracting an estimated more than 2,000 visitors daily, reflecting growing public interest in Oman’s documentary heritage.

Featuring more than 4,000 printed and digital documents, the exhibition highlights key stages in Oman’s political, cultural and diplomatic history.

The displays include photographs of Oman’s imams and sultans, historical records from the Al Busaidy era in Zanzibar, documents related to Dhofar, and material covering Oman’s relations with Gulf countries and the wider world.

Visitors can also view rare manuscripts, distinctive historical records and publications from conferences and seminars organised by the Authority in Oman and abroad.

The exhibition combines traditional displays with digital and interactive sections, enabling visitors to explore archival material electronically through educational applications.

Special attention has also been given to younger visitors through educational booklets and activities aimed at introducing the importance of historical documentation and preservation.

To ensure wider accessibility, the exhibition includes interactive content in sign language and Braille, allowing visitors with hearing and visual impairments to engage with Oman’s historical records.

Al Shahi said the exhibition aims to make archival collections accessible to the public, strengthen national identity, promote awareness of documentary preservation and highlight the Authority’s role in safeguarding Oman’s historical memory.

Held annually during the Khareef season, the exhibition uses the large number of visitors in Dhofar as an opportunity to connect people with Oman’s heritage.

The exhibition will continue until August 20 and is open daily from 5 pm to 10:30 pm.
