MUSCAT: The implementation rate of the dual carriageway linking Al Gaz Roundabout to Bilad Sur in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate has crossed 82 per cent, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology said on Sunday. The road is one of the ministry’s ongoing projects aimed at developing road infrastructure in the governorate.
The ministry continues to implement the remaining works on the road, which is considered one of the vital projects that contribute to enhancing the efficiency of the road network and raising traffic safety levels in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate.
The road connects the Qurayyat-Sur carriageway to Sultan Turki bin Said Road and completes the dual carriageway from Al Gaz Roundabout to Bilad Sur Roundabout at a cost exceeding RO 6 million.
The ministry has completed and opened the first 11.4-kilometre section of the road to traffic, which has contributed to improving traffic flow and raising safety levels on this vital section of the road.
Work is in full swing on the second phase of the project, a 3.5-kilometre stretch that involves converting the existing single-lane road into a dual carriageway, constructing a new roundabout to serve the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Sur and adjacent areas, as well as implementing several box culverts, lighting, safety measures, and traffic and directional signage to achieve the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency.
The project also includes reconstructing service roads and upgrading side entrances to enhance access to residential and commercial areas, as well as support economic activity.
Once completed, the road is expected to improve traffic flow for those travelling from Muscat Governorate towards Sur and the wilayats of Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, reduce travel times, enhance road safety, support socio-economic activities, improve infrastructure quality, and enhance connectivity between governorates.
