BEIJING: The Sultanate of Oman has joined the Global Organization for Cooperation in Artificial Intelligence as a founding member, becoming one of 29 countries to establish the international body aimed at promoting AI cooperation and global governance.
The agreement was signed in Shanghai by Dr Ali bin Amer al Shaithani, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Communications and Information Technology, who led Oman’s delegation to the signing ceremony held alongside the World Artificial Intelligence Conference.
Dr Al Shaithani said Oman’s participation reflects Oman’s commitment to adopting artificial intelligence technologies and engaging with global efforts to develop responsible AI governance.
He noted that Oman has been actively participating in international discussions on AI, including the first Global Dialogue on AI Governance under the auspices of the United Nations, presenting its vision of building a global framework that balances technological innovation with responsible regulation.
The newly established organisation, based in Shanghai, is an independent intergovernmental body focused on strengthening international cooperation to make artificial intelligence safer, more inclusive and beneficial to humanity, while helping bridge the AI divide between countries.
Dr Al Shaithani said Oman’s membership will enhance its access to global expertise, research and emerging technologies, while enabling Oman to contribute to shaping international AI governance frameworks.
The Omani delegation included Dr Khalifa bin Abdullah al Barwani, CEO of the National Centre for Statistics and Information, and Dr Said bin Hamad al Rubaie, President of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, along with other officials specialising in artificial intelligence. - ONA
