Dibba: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has completed the construction work for the marine area rehabilitation project in Musandam Governorate. The initiative covered several coastal areas across the Wilayats of Dibba and Khasab, as well as the Niyabat of Lima, as part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to develop the infrastructure supporting the fisheries sector, enhance the sustainability of marine resources, and improve the working environment for local fishermen.
The project targeted numerous marine villages and coastal areas across the governorate, including Haffah, Sanat, Al Shariyah Al Halwah, Adas, Al Sadween, and other key coastal areas.
Dr Ali bin Abdullah al Alawi, Director-General of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in Musandam Governorate, highlighted that the region is characterised by a rich marine environment teeming with diverse fish stocks. He emphasised that traditional fishing remains one of the most prominent economic activities for the residents, serving as a primary source of income.
"The project includes the provision of fixed docks and shelters, which will significantly reduce the challenges faced by fishermen and their families. It enhances the quality of services provided to them, improves working conditions at landing sites, and helps maintain the quality control of landed fish catches," said Dr Ali bin Abdullah al Alawi.
He explained that the project aims to encourage fishermen to sustain their livelihood, boost the governorate's total fish production, and protect fishing gear from damage. Additionally, the new infrastructure will make boarding and disembarking from fishing boats much safer and easier for everyone involved.
Khalifa bin Ali al Shihi, Director of the Fisheries Department, stated that the infrastructure development included the construction of 12 fixed docks. Among these, seven docks were built in the marine areas belonging to the Wilayat of Dibba, while five docks were established in the marine areas of the Wilayat of Khasab. Furthermore, the project delivered 11 shelters across various coastal sites in the Wilayat of Khasab to protect fishermen and their equipment.
Al Shihi concluded by revealing that the department has already submitted a proposal for the next phase of the marine rehabilitation project. This upcoming phase aims to build upon current achievements and fully complete the essential services ecosystem across Musandam’s coastal communities.
