Timbuktu in northern Mali has been without running water and electricity for a week because of fuel shortages, local and official sources told AFP on Friday.

Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists have been attacking fuel convoys for several months in a bid to hit the economy of the country, which has been mired in conflict for more than a decade.

A local official from electric company Energie du Mali (EDM) confirmed to AFP that the Timbuktu power plant has been shut down since June 19.

"The authorities are aware of the problem," they said.

"We received a supply this Friday which will allow us to at least deliver one or two hours per neighbourhood, although not continuous power."
