MUSCAT: The Oman Film Society has taken part in the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival, marking a new step in its efforts to build international partnerships and open wider opportunities for Omani film-makers.
The participation was coordinated by the Chinese Embassy in Muscat and came at the official invitation of the Shanghai International Film Festival. Oman, represented by the Oman Film Society, was one of only three Arab participants in this year’s Belt and Road Alliance Week, alongside Egypt, represented by the Cairo International Film Festival, and Jordan, represented by the Royal Film Commission of Jordan.
The Omani delegation was led by Sulaiman al Khalili, Vice-President of the Society, and Ahmed al Othman, Head of the Local and International Relations and Cooperation Committee. Their participation forms part of the Society’s wider plan to expand cooperation with international festivals, film institutions and production companies.
Anwar bin Khamis al Ruzaiqi, Chairman of the Oman Film Society, said the Society’s current priority is to empower Omani film-makers by opening international channels that allow them to engage with global expertise and improve their technical and creative skills.
He said the Society is also working to promote Oman’s diverse landscapes and filming locations, positioning Oman as a natural destination for international production companies and directors.
Al Khalili said participation in the Shanghai festival was important because of China’s growing influence in Asian and global cinema. “The Shanghai International Film Festival is one of the most important film events in Asia. Strengthening cooperation with this festival will help expand the presence of the Oman Film Society at the Asian level, particularly in relation to Chinese cinema and developments in film technology,” he said.
Ahmed al Othman said the Society is seeking to move beyond symbolic participation in international events.
“Our aim is to build sustainable partnerships that support Oman’s cinematic infrastructure and strengthen Oman’s position as an attractive destination for film-makers,” he said. “This will also help Omani directors and producers move with greater confidence towards international recognition.” The Society said its participation in Shanghai supports broader efforts to develop Oman’s creative economy, promote film tourism and strengthen the international visibility of Omani cinema.
