As the world continues to experience rapid economic, cultural and technological transformations, national identity remains a vital pillar that helps societies preserve their cultural distinctiveness while strengthening social cohesion. In an era marked by unprecedented connectivity and exposure to diverse cultures, reinforcing national identity has become increasingly important for communities seeking to balance openness with the preservation of their core values and traditions.
In Oman, national identity is deeply rooted in a rich historical legacy and a long-standing civilisation that has shaped the country’s social fabric. Values such as tolerance, coexistence, mutual respect and openness to other cultures have long been defining characteristics of Omani society, enabling it to engage confidently with the wider world while preserving its unique cultural heritage.
As globalisation and digital communication continue to reshape lifestyles and influence younger generations, many citizens believe that safeguarding national identity has become a shared responsibility involving families, educational institutions, media organisations and the wider community.
Salim bin Abdullah, a citizen, noted that national identity is reflected not only in celebrating national occasions but also in everyday behaviour and commitment to the values that have long defined Omani society. “Today’s youth are exposed to a wide range of global influences through digital platforms. This exposure offers valuable opportunities for learning and growth, but it also highlights the importance of remaining connected to our cultural roots and traditions,” he said.
Similarly, Aisha bint Mohammed emphasised the critical role of families in instilling a sense of national identity among younger generations. She explained that introducing children to Oman’s history, achievements and cultural heritage helps strengthen their sense of pride and belonging.
“When young people understand the journey of development that Oman has undergone and appreciate the values that have shaped our society, they become more committed to contributing positively to the nation’s future,” she said.
Observers point out that global transformation does not necessarily threaten national identity. Rather, it presents an opportunity for societies to reaffirm their values while engaging constructively with the wider world. Communities with strong cultural foundations are often better positioned to benefit from international developments without losing their distinctive character.
Educational institutions continue to play a central role in this effort by promoting citizenship values and deepening students’ understanding of Oman’s history, culture and national achievements. School activities, cultural programmes, and community initiatives provide important platforms for strengthening national awareness and encouraging civic engagement among young people.
The media also contributes significantly to preserving and promoting national identity by highlighting the Sultanate of Oman’s achievements, showcasing inspiring national figures and raising awareness about Oman’s cultural and historical heritage. Through responsible and meaningful content, media outlets help reinforce values of belonging and national pride across society.
National identity remains a key element within Oman’s long-term development vision. Oman Vision 2040 places considerable emphasis on preserving Omani culture and identity while empowering citizens to participate effectively in a rapidly evolving global environment. The vision recognises that cultural heritage and national values are essential assets that support innovation, development and social progress.
As global changes continue to accelerate, maintaining a strong sense of national identity remains crucial for ensuring social cohesion and preserving the values that define Omani society. At the same time, it enables individuals to engage confidently with new ideas, technologies and opportunities emerging around the world.
Ultimately, national identity serves as both a source of stability and a foundation for future development.
By preserving its cultural heritage while embracing progress, Oman continues to demonstrate how societies can successfully navigate global transformation without compromising the values that define their national character.
