With summer temperatures continuing to soar across Oman, one silent companion once again emerges as the true ‘hero of the season,’ working tirelessly behind walls, inside offices, homes and vehicles to make daily life bearable. The air conditioner, once considered a luxury in many households, has now become an essential part of modern living, especially during the long, humid summer months across Oman.
As temperatures climb beyond comfortable levels and humidity intensifies in coastal areas, air-conditioning systems operate almost continuously throughout the day. From residential homes and schools to shopping malls, restaurants, and workplaces, cooling systems have become indispensable for maintaining comfort, productivity, and even public health during the summer season.
Across cities such as Muscat, Suhar and Salalah, life during midday slows noticeably as residents seek shelter indoors. Shopping centres and cafés witness increased crowds, not only for leisure and shopping but also as safe havens from the relentless outdoor heat. For many families, indoor air-conditioned spaces have become a practical solution for spending time together during the hottest months of the year.
Abdullah Nasser, an air-conditioning and refrigeration specialist, said the sector experiences one of its busiest periods during summer.
“As soon as temperatures begin to rise, requests for maintenance and installation increase dramatically,” he explained. “Air conditioners are no longer viewed as optional appliances. They are essential, especially in homes with children, elderly family members, or individuals with health conditions affected by extreme heat.” He added that many cooling systems are placed under enormous strain due to nonstop operation, which often results in breakdowns during peak summer periods.
“A large number of problems could be avoided through regular maintenance and timely cleaning of filters and cooling units,” he noted. “Unfortunately, many people wait until the unit stops functioning completely before seeking professional help.”
The growing dependence on air conditioning has also reshaped social habits and business operations. Employers across both public and private sectors recognise the importance of maintaining cool indoor environments to ensure employee comfort and productivity. Likewise, retail businesses rely heavily on comfortable indoor temperatures to attract shoppers during summer afternoons and evenings.
At a shopping mall in Muscat, Noura Musallam described how cooling systems have become central to her family’s daily summer routine.
“During the afternoons, it is almost impossible to spend long periods outdoors,” she said. “We usually head to indoor places with proper air conditioning, not just for shopping, but also to relax and escape the heat together as a family.”
She added that children especially prefer spending time in air-conditioned environments during school holidays, when outdoor activities become difficult due to intense temperatures.
However, this heavy reliance on cooling systems also brings challenges.
Energy specialists note that electricity consumption reaches its highest levels during summer, largely because of continuous air-conditioner use. In many households, cooling systems account for a major portion of monthly electricity bills, particularly during heatwaves.
Experts continue to encourage residents to adopt more efficient energy practices, including setting air conditioners at moderate temperatures, insulating homes properly and conducting routine maintenance to improve performance. Modern cooling systems equipped with energy-saving technologies are also becoming increasingly popular in the Omani market as consumers seek ways to balance comfort with lower electricity consumption.
Meanwhile, businesses specialising in cooling systems have seen growing demand for advanced technologies that provide faster cooling while consuming less energy. Seasonal offers on air-conditioning units and maintenance packages have become common during the summer months, reflecting the importance of the sector in everyday life in Oman.
Despite concerns about energy consumption and rising operational costs, air conditioners remain one of the most important tools for adapting to Oman’s challenging summer climate. Beyond simple comfort, they contribute to healthier indoor environments, better sleep and improved productivity during long periods of extreme heat.
Between the scorching temperatures outside and the cool air indoors, the ‘hero of the season’ continues to perform its role quietly yet effectively. In homes, offices and public spaces across Oman, air conditioners have become more than machines — they are now an inseparable part of daily life during summer, ensuring that routines continue uninterrupted despite the unforgiving heat.
