Oman, Canada sign MoU on political consultation

Muscat: Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, received in Muscat on Wednesday Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada. 


This marks the first official visit of a Canadian foreign minister to the Sultanate of Oman in over a decade. The visit reflects the positive trajectory of bilateral relations over the past fifty years and reaffirms the shared commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region. 


The two ministers agreed to elevate the level of their bilateral partnership and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations, aimed at establishing regular bilateral dialogue. Specifically, both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in the fields of trade, energy, critical minerals, higher education, and tourism, in addition to strengthening people-to-people ties. 


They noted that bilateral trade volume reached Canadian Dollar 222 million in 2025, while acknowledging significant potential for further economic growth. 


The two ministers exchanged views on the conflict in the region, stressing the importance of protecting civilian lives, supporting de-escalation efforts, and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Minister Anand also expressed her appreciation for Oman's longstanding role in regional diplomacy over the past years. 


The two ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to international law, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. Minister Anand extended her sincere gratitude for the warm welcome and generous hospitality extended by the Government of the Sultanate of Oman, reaffirming Canada's commitment to building a substantive and forward-looking partnership with Oman. 

Dr. Khamis Saif all Jabri, Minister of Economy, received today Anita Anand and her accompanying delegation. 


The meeting, held at the Ministry's headquarters, aimed to strengthen the growing economic relations between the Sultanate of Oman and Canada and to explore opportunities for bilateral cooperation in the trade and investment sectors. 


The meeting commenced with a welcoming address in which the Ministry affirmed the depth of relations between the two countries and stressed the importance of building on past cooperation to expand the horizons of economic partnership. The meeting also featured a visual presentation highlighting the key features of the Omani economy and the developments it is undergoing amid changing economic conditions, alongside a review of Omani-Canadian economic relations and promising sectors for cooperation. Discussions during the meeting also covered the priorities of Oman Vision 2040, particularly within non-oil sectors such as manufacturing industries, logistics, technology, and clean energy. diversification targets.
