MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman continues to strengthen its approach towards developing technical and vocational education as a key pillar in preparing national talent capable of keeping pace with rapid economic and technological transformations, while equipping the labour market with skills aligned with future demands and the requirements of emerging sectors.
This direction reflects the country’s broader vision of building a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy, as the technical and vocational education sector has witnessed notable expansion in recent years in terms of programmes, specialisations, and partnerships with both public and private sector institutions. Efforts have also focused on modernising curricula and linking education with practical applications and advanced technologies.
Dr Khalifa bin Mohammed al Fatahi, Head of the Planning Department at the Ministry of Education, said there is a growing direction towards expanding technical and vocational education in line with labour market needs.
He explained that specialists in technical and vocational education, in cooperation with the Implementation Support Unit at the Ministry of Economy, have developed targeted plans extending to 2030, with continued strategies through 2040, aimed at setting objectives that keep pace with future labour market developments and evolving economic demands.
According to Dr Al Fatahi, the initiative reflects increasing awareness of the importance of equipping students with practical and technical skills that have become essential across many sectors, particularly amid the ongoing digital transformation and the expansion of industries related to artificial intelligence, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing and logistics services.
Through these plans, Oman seeks to establish a more flexible and responsive education system capable of adapting to changing economic realities. Educational institutions are steadily updating academic programmes and introducing new specialisations aligned with the needs of promising industries, contributing to improved employment opportunities and enhancing the competencies of Omani graduates.
Technical and vocational education is increasingly viewed as one of the key drivers for achieving the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, which places strong emphasis on human capital development and strengthening the competitiveness of the national economy. The sector also plays an important role in promoting the culture of vocational and technical work while encouraging young people to acquire practical skills that enable them to enter the labour market directly or launch their own entrepreneurial ventures.
Specialists believe that the accelerating global transformation of jobs requires greater focus on technical expertise and professional adaptability, particularly as some traditional jobs continue to disappear while new technology-driven professions emerge. This highlights the importance of investing early in technical and vocational education to ensure Omani youth remain competitive in both local and regional labour markets.
Observers further note that the success of Oman’s expansion plans in technical and vocational education depends on sustained collaboration between educational institutions and the private sector to ensure programmes remain aligned with actual market demands, alongside raising public awareness of the importance of vocational pathways and reshaping outdated perceptions surrounding technical careers.
