NIZWA: The 'Language of hope ... bridges without borders' initiative concluded in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate as part of the Sultanate of Oman’s celebration of Arab Deaf Week 2026 in the Sultan Qaboos Mosque Hall in Nizwa on Monday morning.
The initiative was organised by the Consumer Protection Department in partnership with the Governorate Office and the Directorate General of Education.
The closing ceremony was held under the auspices of Ahmed bin Salim bin Saif al Toubi, Director-General of Administrative and Financial Affairs in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. It witnessed the participation of several government entities, alongside officials, specialists, and active engagement from members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
The initiative aimed to promote inclusion and enhance consumer awareness among all segments of society by empowering deaf and hard of hearing individuals with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, while also strengthening communication skills through sign language. This contributes to improving service quality and fostering greater societal integration.
Ali bin Salim bin Marhoon al Hadhrami, Director of the Consumer Protection Department in Al Dakhiliyah, emphasised that such initiatives represent a vital pillar in strengthening institutional integration and community service. He said: “These qualitative initiatives play an important role in promoting consumer awareness and require inclusive communication tools that ensure messages reach all segments of society without exception, reflecting our direction toward a more aware and inclusive community.”
Among the event’s highlights was the inspiring story of artist Fatima bint Mohammed al Busaidy, who shared her personal journey. She said, “My journey with challenges began in childhood. After losing my hearing, I found in art a way to express myself. Despite the difficulties I faced in my academic path, I continued self-learning until I was able to participate in art exhibitions both locally and internationally.” She added, “Perseverance, continuous learning, and patience are essential to achieving success. I encourage everyone to invest in their abilities and never give in to challenges.” The event also featured participation from students of Hafsa bint Omar School, who showcased handmade products reflecting their creativity and skills. Hadeel al Amri said: “This initiative gave us the opportunity to present our abilities and connect with the community. We hope to gain trust and support so we can demonstrate our capabilities and actively contribute to society.” Rimaz al Amri added that the experience boosted her confidence and allowed her to learn from other successful individuals within the same community.
Student Malak al Hinai expressed her happiness at participating and meeting artist Fatima al Busaidy, saying, “She is a true role model. Her story inspired me to continue developing my artistic talent and work hard to achieve my ambitions.” The programme included an awareness paper titled “Your awareness protects you,” highlighting the importance of informed consumer decisions, as well as an educational theatrical performance presented by students of Sultan bin Saif School, addressing consumer related issues in an engaging manner.
Attendees also visited the accompanying exhibition corners, which included the Consumer Protection Department, the Directorate General of Education with participation from schools for the deaf and hard of hearing, the Directorate General of Social Development, and Nizwa Hospital. These corners provided educational content and awareness services that reinforced inclusive concepts.
The event concluded with honouring participating and supporting entities in recognition of their contributions to the initiative’s success. The initiative underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in building a more inclusive and aware society, in line with Oman Vision 2040.
