MANAH: A major heritage revitalisation initiative aimed at transforming Harat Al Aqur in Nizwa into a sustainable tourism destination was launched at the Oman Across Ages Museum in Manah on Wednesday.

The project, part of the seventh edition of the “Shell Gift to the Nation” programme, was launched under the auspices of Sultan bin Salim al Habsi, Minister of Finance, in the presence of Ali al Janabi, Country Chairman for Shell in Oman, and other officials.

The project includes the restoration of several heritage buildings and pathways, including the rehabilitation of Al Aqur’s historic wall, which dates back more than 1,200 years. It also involves upgrading site facilities while preserving its authentic architectural identity. In addition, a dedicated visitor centre will be established to enhance the visitor experience. It will be powered by solar power to ensure a sustainable energy supply for the area.

The initiative also aims to empower entrepreneurs, productive families, and small and medium enterprises by enabling them to benefit from tourism development. It is also expected to generate both direct and indirect employment, contributing to local in-country value and economic activity.

Al Janabi said, “The seventh edition of Shell Gift to the Nation is rooted in the belief that the highest form of celebrating heritage is to keep it alive within the community, valued and capable of generating sustainable economic returns. The initiative seeks to strike a balance between preserving cultural identity and enabling community development through integrated sustainability practices."

Dr Ishaq bin Hilal al Sharyani, Adviser to Al Aqur Endowment in Nizwa, said, “Al Aqur is not merely a historical site, but a living memory that reflects the essence of Omani identity through its architecture, crafts and way of life. The partnership represents an important step towards balancing careful restoration with sustainable development opportunities for the local community."

Al Ahnaf al Zubaidi, Social Investment Manager at Shell Oman, explained that the project aims at revitalising Al Aqur in a way that enhances sustainable tourism and preserves the cultural and social heritage of the area. The project will be implemented in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, with a strong focus on engaging Omani companies and maximising in-country value to ensure long-term economic impact.
