In a modest studio where sketches meet fabric and tradition blends with bold imagination, Omani designer Afra al Maskari is quietly reshaping the world of girls’ fashion. A graduate of Sultan Qaboos University with a degree in public law, she chose to follow her creative passion instead of a conventional career path, founding Zadan collection, a brand dedicated to elegant designs for young girls.
Her journey began in 2023 with just RO 250 and four initial designs that quickly captured attention. What started as a personal escape through art soon evolved into a growing business. Supported strongly by her family and husband, Afra embraced entrepreneurship, gaining both creative freedom and financial independence.
Her designs are deeply inspired by Gulf heritage, particularly Omani traditions, yet tailored for young girls in a way that feels modern, soft and refined. Using high-quality fabrics, beads, threads and lace, she creates pieces that balance cultural authenticity with contemporary elegance. Her thoughtful choice of calm, uncommon colours adds a unique sophistication to children’s wear.
What distinguishes Zadan collection is not only the quality of its designs but also its strong connection with customers. Afra actively listens to feedback and continuously improves her collections to meet international tastes too. Combined with creative marketing and visually appealing photoshoots, this has helped her brand grow rapidly both inside and outside Oman.
Today, her creations are in demand across the Gulf countries and beyond. Orders come from countries such as Libya and Iraq, as well as internationally from the United States and France, especially among Arab communities living abroad.
Among her proudest achievements is the expansion of her brand to include “Zadan Musk”, a fragrance line that has become a customer favourite. She has also been selected as a designer for important events and special occasions both within Oman and internationally. Recently, she achieved recognition at the level of the United Arab Emirates, marking an important milestone in her journey.
Despite her success, Afra’s path was not easy. In her early days, she faced significant challenges, including long travel distances to workshops and limited control over production. Over time, she overcame these obstacles by partnering with professional manufacturing teams that allowed her to manage her work more effectively.
Today, her biggest challenges include sourcing fabrics in large quantities and protecting her designs from imitation. In response, she has shifted towards more intricate patterned fabrics that highlight her unique artistic identity and are harder to replicate.
Looking ahead, Afra aims to expand Zadan collection into a broader fashion line, including abayas, textiles and casual wear for girls. With increasing international demand and invitations to design for fashion events both locally and abroad, her vision continues to grow.
For Afra al Maskari, designing for children is more than fashion. In fact, it is about celebrating innocence, culture and beauty through every piece. And as her designs travel across borders, they carry a story of ambition, creativity and Omani identity stitched into every detail.
