Al MUSANNAH: Dr Saif bin Abdullah al Haddabi, President of the Research and Innovation Authority, presided over the opening of the 'What If 2026' forum for Research and Innovation which brought together students, researchers, and innovators, along with representatives from government and private sector entities supporting the national innovation ecosystem.
Attended by Dr Said bin Hamad al Rubaie, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, UTAS Al Musannah, the forum aimed to provide an interactive platform that bridges scientific research and entrepreneurship, enabling the transformation of ideas into practical applications that serve society and contribute to the knowledge-based economy, in alignment with Oman Vision 2040.
The programme featured scientific sessions addressing collaboration between academic institutions and industry, alongside applied research projects tackling local challenges in Al Batinah South with implementable solutions.
A highlight of the event was the 'Best Research Project' competition, which showcased multidisciplinary student participation, as well as the finals of the 'Sumo Robot' competition. The accompanying exhibition displayed student innovations and research experiences, in addition to interactive zones where visitors engaged in design thinking and problem-solving activities. Advanced technologies such as robotics, drones and 3D printing were also demonstrated.
Omani innovators shared success stories in transforming ideas into applied projects across fields such as environmental technologies, artificial intelligence and industrial applications.
Huriya bint Mousa al Balushi, Head of Innovation and Technology Transfer at UTAS-A, emphasised that the forum provides a practical environment linking theory with application and empowering students to develop impactful solutions. She noted that the event reflects UTAS’s commitment to fostering innovation, strengthening partnerships, and promoting applied research that aligns education outcomes with labour market needs and sustainable development in Oman.
