MUSCAT: Scores of people joined Nadhira al Harthy, the first Omani woman to summit Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) and Sulaiman al Naabi, an Everest climber, to raise awareness on healthy living by hiking as part of the first International Wellness Day last week.

The mass hiking campaign, organised by the Embassy of Nepal, witnessed several men and women taking steps along the scenic Al Wadi Al Kabir trail.

The hiking group included Dornath Aryal, Ambassador of Nepal, Lyu Jian, Ambassador of China, spouses of the ambassadors, embassy officials, media personalities and the Nepali community.

While addressing the group, Ambassador Aryal extended thanks to Everest Climbers, diplomats, media people and all other participants for joining the hike. He stated that on March 10, 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a historic resolution to declare April 15 as International Wellness Day.

Nepal had the honour of leading the initiative. Ambassador Aryal further stated that wellness is a holistic concept that includes our physical, mental, emotional, social and environmental well-being.

The ambassador said, "Nepal aims to become a global centre for wellness. We are blessed with beautiful mountains, rivers, flora and fauna, pleasant weather, and rich traditions of yoga and meditation. These make Nepal an attractive destination for wellness."

The event was followed by a brief meditation session. Apart from promoting wellness, the event also focused on environmental conservation initiatives. The participants collected plastic bottles and waste found along the trail, reflecting a shared commitment to environmental protection.

The ambassador said that the Embassy of Nepal believes that this initiative served not just to celebrate the International Wellness Day but also promoting mutual goodwill and tourism between Nepal and Oman.

The first International Wellness Day is observed across the globe. The event focused on raising awareness of Wellness Day and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
