Muscat: Omani striker Mohsin al Ghassani led Thailand’s Bangkok United to a valuable 1-0 away win over Japan's Gamba Osaka in the first leg of the AFC Champions League Two 2025-26 semifinal, after scoring the only goal of the match from an early penalty to hand his side an important advantage ahead of next week’s return leg in Bangkok.
Al Ghassani struck in the 15th minute at Suita City Stadium, giving the Thai side an early lead against one of Japan’s leading clubs, before Bangkok United managed to hold on to their advantage until the final whistle despite sustained pressure from the home side throughout both halves. Gamba Osaka’s task became even more difficult after captain Shinnosuke Nakatani was sent off in the 74th minute.
Despite Gamba Osaka’s superiority in possession and number of attempts, Bangkok United produced a strong defensive display and showed notable tactical discipline to preserve their lead until full-time. Statistics showed that the Japanese side enjoyed 71.5 per cent possession, registered 21 attempts compared with Bangkok’s eight, and won 18 corners against just one for the visitors, yet the Thai club still succeeded in limiting their opponents’ real threat on goal.
Al Ghassani emerged as one of the key figures of the match, not only for scoring the winning goal, but also for his role in executing the counter-attacking approach adopted by his side, in addition to his influential presence in forward movements and his ability to exploit the spaces left by Gamba Osaka’s attacking pressure. Bangkok’s pressing also contributed to the situation that later left the opposition a man down.
For his part, Omani forward Mohsin al Ghassani said Bangkok had shown great resilience during the match after managing to contain Gamba and restrict them to limited efforts on target. Al Ghassani said: “It was a very difficult match against a very good team. We managed to score first and then focused on the defensive side. In the end, we defended well and won the match.”
He added: "When preparing for this match, we knew they liked to press, so we prepared for counter-attacks. We made some good movements, helped each other very well, and when we attacked, we did so collectively."
He continued: “Their pressing gave us spaces to attack, and we were able to create some good chances. From one of those moves, we also managed to win a foul that led to one of their players being sent off.”
This victory gives Bangkok United a strong boost ahead of the return leg scheduled for April 15 at Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok, as Al Ghassani continues to underline his growing impact on the continental stage after playing the leading role in one of his team’s most important matches of the season. The Thai club now hopes to continue its run and reach the final, becoming the first Thai club to achieve that feat.
