ISTANBUL: With the arrival of spring, Istanbul has once again transformed into a vibrant tapestry of colour as the annual Tulip Festival unfolds across the city, celebrating both nature’s beauty and a rich Ottoman legacy.
Thousands of tulips in dazzling hues now adorn some of Istanbul’s most iconic locations, including Emirgan Park, Gülhane Park and Sultanahmet Square, drawing large numbers of visitors each day. Locals and tourists alike are treated to sweeping floral displays that turn public spaces into living works of art.
The festival reflects a deep-rooted cultural heritage.
Tulips have long been associated with the Ottoman Empire, symbolising elegance and refinement before eventually making their way to Europe, where they became globally celebrated.
Speaking to ONA, Saleh Çetin, media officer at the Istanbul Municipality, highlighted the intricate designs that define the festival. He noted that the flowers are meticulously arranged into geometric patterns and artistic formations, creating visually striking scenes that captivate photographers and visitors.
Beyond its floral displays, the festival also features a range of cultural and artistic activities, including exhibitions and open-air performances. These events enhance its standing as one of Türkiye’s most prominent seasonal attractions.
Emirgan Park, in particular, has become a focal point of the celebrations, with thousands of tulips blooming in carefully curated arrangements. The city’s commitment to the festival dates back to 2005, when authorities began organising annual events and planting tulips across major tourist sites.
Each year, the municipality expands the scale and creativity of the displays.
Among the highlights is the creation of a vishaal tulip carpet in the historic Sultanahmet district, showcasing an extraordinary blend of artistry and horticulture.
Tulips hold special significance for Türkiye, having been brought from Central Asia to Anatolia by the Turks, and later spreading to Europe during the 16th century.
