MUSCAT, APRIL 6
Oman is strengthening its role in regional data-driven policymaking following a cooperation programme signed between the Statistical Centre of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Arabian Gulf University.
The agreement focuses on enhancing joint work in scientific research, statistical capacity building and the exchange of knowledge and technical expertise — key pillars in supporting evidence-based decision-making across GCC economies.
The programme outlines several areas of collaboration, including the exchange of studies and research, implementation of specialised training programmes and the organisation of joint scientific conferences and workshops. It also provides for technical and advisory visits aimed at strengthening institutional coordination and sharing best practices.
A joint committee will be formed to oversee implementation and develop an action plan for the proposed initiatives. This structured approach is expected to ensure effective execution and measurable outcomes, while supporting the development of an integrated Gulf statistical system.
The initiative aligns with the GCC’s strategic plan for joint statistical work (2026–2030), which seeks to build a smart and reliable statistical ecosystem, enhance academic partnerships and develop a qualified workforce capable of leveraging data science and advanced analytics.
For Oman, the move supports ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional capacity and improve the use of data in shaping economic policies. As the Sultanate of Oman advances its diversification agenda under Oman Vision 2040, access to accurate and timely data is becoming increasingly critical for planning and investment decisions.
The partnership also reflects a broader push by the GCC Statistical Centre to expand collaboration with academic and research institutions, bridging the gap between statistical production and practical applications.
With demand for high-quality data rising across the region, the initiative is expected to enhance policy efficiency and support sustainable development outcomes in Oman and the wider GCC.
