MUSCAT: A national forum dedicated to empowering people with disabilities brought together government officials, academics and community members at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Muscat, highlighting a growing push towards inclusion, accessibility and opportunity across Oman.

Held under the auspices of Dr Abdullah bin Hamoud al Harthy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Social Development for Persons with Disabilities Affairs, the forum aimed to raise public awareness of the rights and capabilities of people with disabilities while promoting their integration into society and the workforce.

Dr Khalid al Abri, Assistant Vice-Chancellor of the university, stressed that inclusion is not achieved through slogans but through tangible outcomes. "Diversity is not a barrier, but a gateway to innovation and integration,” he said, underscoring the forum’s theme of transforming differences into opportunities.

The forum featured a range of activities, including scientific research presentations, a panel discussion, an art exhibition and accompanying events showcasing talents and entrepreneurial ideas by people with disabilities.

Dr Qassim al Ajmi, Head of Research and Consultation at the university, showcased a series of ongoing projects addressing various types of disabilities, including visual, physical and developmental conditions. He noted that many of these projects are still under development and reflect the growing role of innovation and technology in improving accessibility and quality of life. He emphasised that practical, research-based solutions are essential to addressing real-world challenges.

One of the highlights was an inspiring video story of Turki al Hosni, a deaf student at the university, who shared his journey of overcoming societal perceptions and personal challenges. His message resonated strongly with attendees as he emphasised resilience, self-belief and the importance of creating opportunities rather than waiting for them.

“We are capable individuals with untapped potential,” he said. “We are part of this nation, and we contribute to building its future.” A panel discussion titled “Integration for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities” was moderated by Ahmed al Numani, a PhD researcher, and brought together representatives from multiple sectors.

The forum concluded with a call for stronger partnerships and sustained efforts to shift societal perceptions, emphasising that true empowerment begins with awareness and collective responsibility.
